Strategies for the socio-ecological transformation of agriculture
17.–19. november 2023 Franz-Mehring-Platz 1 in Berlin.
We spent a weekend in Berlin with over 130 representatives from science, politics, practice and civil society discussing the urgently needed transformation of agriculture, in particular measures and strategies for reducing animal numbers.
Why this conference?
In 2023, Germany remains a stronghold of meat and milk production, even though the disastrous effects have long been known: greenhouse gases, animal suffering, health risks, global injustice – the list of problems is big and the need for action is bigger. At the same time, farmers also urgently need positive prospects.
One thing is clear: animal farming must be reduced as quickly as possible. According to the Planetary Health Diet, a reduction of at least 75 percent is needed to keep within planetary boundaries. Animal rights activists are calling for complete abolition, but the German government isn’t giving this issue the necessary attention and in the public debate the topic has not yet reached the urgency it deserves.
With the conference “Animal numbers down, but with fairness!”, we brought together stakeholders from different contexts, ensured networking and promoted knowledge exchange through an exciting programme.
