Neighbourhood canteens have the potential to make climate-friendly, wholesome food affordable and thus accessible to as many people as possible.
In this way, they also promote social cohesion by establishing the act of cooking itself and eating together as spaces for social interaction. However, setting up and running such canteens can be challenging due to various obstacles, and so far there has been very little support available beyond the local level.
Together with the ‘Kantine für Alle Kassel’, we have created an online toolkit that brings together the experiences of existing canteens and further relevant information on the set-up process and day-to-day running. It covers topics ranging from group organisation and legal structure to finding suitable premises, cooking for large groups of people, comprehensive information on hygiene regulations, as well as tips on funding, public relations and networking.
The toolkit is currently only available in German.
Whilst Tönnies, Wiesenhof and others spend millions of euros a year on marketing to fend off public criticism and maintain a positive image, we are using this platform to build an alternative public sphere and ensure greater transparency. On the platform, you’ll find relevant data on over 100 slaughterhouses in Germany, such as their annual slaughter capacity, drinking water consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and reports of scandals.
The platform is currently only available in German.

Each and every one of us can play a part in bringing about change to our food system. There are various ways to do this. Changing one’s own consumption habits is certainly the most obvious option for many, but it is by no means the only one. We explore what else can be done to drive forward the transformation of the food system – and showcase pilot projects that are already putting this into practice, from which we can learn and build upon.
